Vajikarana Tantra

Vajikarana Tantra deals with various diseases like infertility and weakness of the shukra dhatu or the vital reproductive fluids of the body. The anatomical and physiological portions of Ashtang Ayurveda are based on three factors- dosh (basic body constituents), dhatu (body tissues) and mala (body wastes ). Dhatu decides the configuration of the body and functions under the governance of the dosha. In all, there are seven dhatu: rasa, rakta, mansa, med, asthi, majja and shukra. From rasa (life sap) the body develops rakta (blood), from rakta it develops mansa (muscles), from mansa is developed med (fat), from med is built up asthi (bones), asthi gives rise to majja (nervous system) and from majja is created shukra (reproductive elements in body). Shukra is regarded as the supreme body tissue, the end product of body metabolism. Vajikarana Tantra asserts that for intimate satisfaction, for successful copulation and for better offspring , the shukra dhatu should be in good condition, and for this, the dhatu sequence ought to function consistently well. This is where vajikaran drugs (aphrodisiacs) come into play. They help in giving strength and vigor to the shukra dhatu thus enlivening the sexual potentiality of the body.

Since semen is the visible end product of the functioning of the chain of dhatu, practitioners of Vajikarana Tantra consider semen as a very valuable fluid that should not be wasted only for the sake of pleasure. In other words, this branch promoted celibacy as an essential condition for maintaining good health. It helps increase the will power, intellect and memory in addition to a healthy body. The chief purpose of shukra should be to produce healthy progeny, which lays the foundation of a future healthy society. Thus, Vajikarana Tantra tries to harness the sexual prowess and utilise it for the betterment of the society. Abstinence was recommended as a necessary condition for producing a mature and powerful shukra dhatu. The Ayurvedic practitioners promoted the general belief that if the whole of the society followed the guidelines of Vajikarana Tantra strictly then it would produce tejaswi (bright and brilliant) and ojaswi (those who have a stronger vital force supporting their life) progeny.

Vajikarana Tantra aims at curing all types of physical and psychological sexual problems like impotence, libido, poor erection and early ejaculation in males and sterility and frigidity in females. Ashtang Ayurveda strongly believed that a weak shukra dhatu was the causative factor that lies behind all male and female sexual problems. Vajikaran tantra claims that it has guidelines for a normal, healthy and mature shukra dhatu, which is ultimately essential for satisfying and productive sex . Apart from prescribing a lot of effective formulations to provide nutrition to enhance the quality of the vital body fluids it also emphasizes on the use of aphrodisiac medicinal formulations and other tonic preparations to enhance one`s potency so that the man and the woman becomes capable of copulating with each other.

To sum up, we can say that Vajikarana Tantra is that branch of Ashtang Ayurved , which deals with sexuality. It talks about the anatomy, physiology, pathology, diet and medicines involved in sexual activities. Vajikarana Tantra states that sex should be guarded by rules and regulations in order to maintain good health and produce good progeny. This will in due course lead to a better society.

Rasayana Tantra – Rejuvenation

Rasayana Tantra or Jara Chikitsa is that branch of Ayurvedic science which deals with various preventive measures for ensuring a hale and hearty existence. It is a kind of rejuvenating therapy, which promotes rejuvenation in a healthy person and restores a diseased person to health. Rasayana Tantra aims at longevity, enhanced memory, health, youthfulness, radiance of complexion, generosity, bodily vigour and the sharpness of the senses. Rasayana implies that physical, mental and spiritual support which helps the human body to come out of its age or disease induced degenerated condition and regain health. The practitioners of this branch of Ashtang Ayurved recommend various treatments for checking the wear and tear of the body tissues due to age or diseases. They even claim that Rasayana Tantra has the unique potentiality to retard the process of aging.

Rasayana Tantra (Geriatrics And Rejuvenation Therapy)Rasayana Tantra improves the metabolic activities which in turn ensure proper bio- transformation leading to health and normal life. The curative procedure mainly involves boosting up the ojas (vital force of life) and the immune system. It helps a person to sustain good health or to regain impaired or lost physical or mental health. Ojas is responsible for a glowing appearance, sharp memory, consistenty high performance and every expected pleasure. The adjective ojaswi is used for those persons who maintain good health in all seasons of the year and in all stages of their life. It is almost analogous to obtaining a high grade in a physical or mental fitness exam throughout one`s life span. To achieve this state of health, Rasayana Tantra suggests regeneration of dhatu or body tissues from time to time. A person who goes through this therapy seriously is ensured a long, disease free and vigorous life .

There are two types of treatment in Rasayana Tantra. The first type is prescribed to a patient who is short of time, unenthusiastic and cannot take much effort or one who cannot undergo the full length of the treatment for some unavoidable circumstances. This category of patients receive a short package of Rasayana Tantra . That person is allowed to carry on with his or her own daily routine simultaneously. The patient is advised dietary changes and changes in life style in addition to certain rasayana medicines. These medicines are very meticulously chosen keeping in mind the patient`s age, sex, prakruti (constitution), daily habits, living conditions, past ailments and the present condition of the body.

Kaya kalpa (total renovation of the body) , the second type of treatment under Rasayana Tantra is more complex . The patient is keep apart from his or her daily activities for a certain period of time and has to reside in a kutir (hut) which is specifically devised for Rasayana Tantra . He or she is kept here under the inspection of an ayurvedic specialist. The patient has to undergo an intensive treatmental procedure in addition to specially cooked food and constantly monitored lifestyle in the kutir. It is believed that when the patient comes out of the kutir after going through the entire treatment, his or her body is completely rejuvenated. All the degenerated dhatu (body tissues) are replaced by new, active and lively dhatu thus ensuring the person a fresh and reinvigorated life.

Before starting the rasayana schedule, the patient is advised to undergo panchkarma (cleansing ). This helps in the initial detoxification of the body and prepares it for the rasayana processes . The rasayana regime includes several physical, mental and spiritual disciplinary activities along with medicines. Rasayana Tantra is supposed to take care of the individual in all respects of life during the period of treatment.

Rejuvenation Therapy using Bhasma (calyxes)Rasayana Tantra advises the patient to follow a very strict diet along with the medicines. Amalaki, haritaki, trifala, brungaraj, ashwagandha, punarnava, chitraka are some examples of herbs that are used to make rasayana medicines. These are collectively known as rasayanakar. Moreover, Bhasma (calyxes) of various metals like gold, silver etc., bhasma of jewels like hiraka (diamond), manikya (ruby), moti (pearl), etc. are precious components in the group of rasayana medicines. They are believed to have aphrodisiac qualities.

In conclusion, we can say that Rasayana Tantra ensures rejuvenation and provides vital energy. It bestows the gift of health to the young as well as the old. This ancient branch explains why the Ayurvedic sages had such great longevity and glowing health.

Toxicology – Agada Tantra

Agada-Tantra-Agada Tantra is a specialized branch of Ayurveda that offers us meticulously detailed information about the non- animal ( sthavar) and animal (jangam) poisons (visha) and the methods of elimination of these poisons from the human body. It particularly advocates different antidotes for materials which are poisonous to the human body. The branch of Agada Tantra finds explicit mention in Charak Sanhita, Sushruta Sanhita and Sharangdhar Sanhita. Uttar Sthana, the sixth section of Ashtang Ayurved, a mammoth book written by the eminent sage Vagbhata Rishi has a total of 40 adhyayas (chapters). Out of these 40 adhyaya, 4 adhyaya discuss Agada Tantra or visha tantra (toxicology and forensic medicine). It can be said that these 4 adhyaya are the essence of all ancestral sanhitas and they are adequate to give us a comprehensive idea about this particular branch of Ashtang ayurved.

Agada Tantra Agada Tantra deals with a wide range of natural poisons or toxins produced by members of the animal kingdom (mammals, reptiles, insects, etc.) and poisonous substances from plants or herbs (belladonna, aconite etc.). This branch also includes information on how to tackle poisonous substances derived from minerals and metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, copper, etc.) and artificial poisoning from drugs. Agada Tantra insists that substances which are `drugs` when administered in the correct dose may become poisons when taken in overdose. This branch provides information regarding fatal doses of various poisons, which when administered into an enemy`s body system cause death.

Agada Tantra also deals with the toxic effects of different substances from air, water and food. Polluted air, contaminated water and unhygienic or contaminated or stale food can cause poisoning in the human body. In addition to this , they may also result in the spread of epidemics in a society . Ayurved has a detailed description of the causes and treatment for food poisoning. It enlists different types of foods that are safe when taken separately but act as poison when consumed together. Agada Tantra says that meat from animals, birds and aquatic animals turns into poison if cooked or consumed with phaseolus radiatus, honey, milk, sprouted legumes or jaggery. Moreover, chicken and curd act as poison when eaten together . Few types of food, when consumed in very large amount, act as poison and harm the body. Excess consumption of chilies, spices and mustard oil results in irritation in the digestive tract and eventually shows effects similar to that of a toxin.

Some types of food prepared or kept in iron or copper utensils turn into poison. For instance, buttermilk or other sour preparations when kept in a copper container for a long time, undergoes transformation into a substance injurious to health according to Agada Tantra. Thus Agada Tantra insists that food substances cause severe or chronic poisoning if the means of their preparation or storage is defective .

Agada Tantra (Toxicology) Agad Tantra holds that certain potentially poisonous substances such as mercury and lead can be used as medicines if properly processed under the supervision of ayurvedic scholars and applied in the prescribed dose. Tracing this path shown by Agad Tantra , today we have many medicines available in combination with mercury. This branch of ayurvedic medicine and pharmacology is well known by the name rasa shastra and parad kalpa. Agad Tantra also postulates that expensive stones like diamonds and valuable metals that are not palatable to the human beings thus are toxins for a healthy body can be processed and used in powdered form in certain urgent necessities .

Summarily , we can say that Agad Tantra or visha tantra is that branch of Ashtang Ayurved which deals with various natural and artificial toxic substances and poisons in detail, along with their antidotes and curative procedures. This branch is very important in the sense that it purges the body from poisons which might otherwise prove fatal.

Shalya Tantra

Surgery – Shalya Tantra

Shalya Tantra is a significant branch of ayurveda, dealing with surgery. The name of the sage-physician Sushruta is synonymous with surgery. From the Sushruta Samhita, it is clear that sophisticated methods of surgery were in vogue in India, thousands of years ago. Shalya tantra means removal of an irritating factor from the human body. Shalya refers to the irritating factor, and tantra means technique by which this cause /factor is removed. The surgical instruments were derived from natural substances like branches of trees, broad leaves and such things. The major drawback of Shalya tantra was the lack of proper anti septic precautions at that time. Moreover, the instruments in use were crude and they induced pain.

Shalya Tantra became popular as it could give fast relief when compared to the slow process of recovery from medicines or herbs. Charaka, the best-known physician of ayurvedic medicine, also recommended Shalya Tantra in treating certain diseases, which required immediate attention like hemorrhoids.

In the ancient India, surgery was principally pioneered by Ayurveda. Shalya Chikitsa is a significant branch of Ayurvedic science. The name of the sage-physician, Susruta, is synonymous with surgery. From his treatise Susruta Samhita, we have become aware of the thousand of years ago sophisticated methods of surgery that were practiced in India. Topics of intestinal obstructions, bladder stones, and the use of dead bodies for dissection and learning were taught and practiced in ancient India.

The original text of Susruta has a detailed discussion of the exhaustive range of surgical methods, which is inclusive of methods on how to deal with various types of tumors, internal and external injuries, fracture of bones, complications during pregnancy and delivery and obstruction in intestinal loop. Susruta was the first surgeon to develop cosmetic surgery in ayurveda. His surgical treatment for trichiasis can be reckoned with some of the modern operative techniques used for this eye disease.

Charaka, the best-known physician of Ayurvedic medicine, also recommended for Shalya Tantra for the treatment of certain diseases, which required immediate attention such as hemorrhoids. The long foreign rule in India and lack of promotion stalled the progress of Ayurvedic surgery in the middle of the second millennium. Another major draw back of Shalya tantra was lack of proper aseptic precautions during the earlier days. In addition to this, the instruments in use were crude (because of the materials used) and their use was painful.

Diseases Treated

According to Susruta, Shalya tantra is best suited, when the problem is beyond just medicinal repair. In cases like, Arbuda (abscesses, cysts), Gandamala (enlarged lymph nodes), Mul- vyadhi (hemorrhoids), Gud-bransh (prolapse rectum), Ashmari (stones), Mutravaodh (retention of urine) and stanarog (breast diseases), Shalya tantra should be used. The treatment would not only give faster relief to the ailing person, but also be beneficial in situations, where kayachikitsa will fall short.

Procedures

In this branch of ayurvedic treatment, describes detailed information about the pre-operative procedures, general procedures, post-operative procedures, marma’s (significant points) and also about anesthesia. Along with this, it also describes the types of bandages, shastra (sharp instruments), yantras (blunt instruments) and sutures (stitches) used in the surgery. The use of various surgical instruments is also described in the Susruta Samhita for the treatment.

Instruments Used

In Shalya tantra, the instruments described were mainly made from stone, wood, branches of trees, broad leaves and other such natural materials. For ligatures a creeper i.e. a climbing plant was also sometimes used. The treatment of Shalya Tantra was popular, because this could give fast relief as compared to the slow process of recovery from medicines or herbs. Diseases, which requires instant treatment in those cases shalyachikitsa was the best method.

Shalakya tantra – Ears, eyes, nose and throat

shalakya-tantra-therapyOne out of the eight branches of Ayurveda, Shalakya Tantra deals with the etiology, diagnosis, prognosis, prevention and treatment of diseases that are located above the neck region such as the head, ear, nose, eye and throat. It is responsible for all types of problems in and around the head. The name of the branch is so called because of its excessive use of ‘Shalaka’, which means probe. In South India, the branch is also known by the name – Urdhwangchikitsa. The word can be broken into two parts – Urdhwang which means the body parts above the shoulder and Chikitsa which signifies treatment. In Shalakya Tantra, there are different types of probe that are included. Some of them are probe of the eye (netra shalaka), probe of the ear (karna shalaka), probe of the nose (nasa shalaka), of the throat (mukh shalaka) and of the lips (oshta shalaka).

Textual Reference

The process of Shalakya Tantra includes different techniques that are applicable for the treatment of all the problems. The main aspects of Shalyakya tantra is described in the ancient ayurvedic texts such as Sushrut Sanhita, Charak Sanhita and Ashtang Hruday. The books mainly deal with treatment of different types of conjunctivitis and glaucoma, along with surgical procedure of the removal of cataract and cosmetic surgery such as rhinoplasty and auroplasty (repair of traumatized nose and ear). Apart from the above mentioned complicated problems and of treatment, the three samhitas – Charaka, Susruta and Astanga Hridaya, recommend simple home remedies for minor problems, such as dryness of eye, wax in ear, migraine and mouth ulcers etc. which are being successfully administered even today.

Diseases

Approximately 72 diseases of the eye are discussed by Sushrut Sanhita, including surgical procedures for cataracts, conjunctivitis, pterygium, pre-glaucomatic condition and glaucoma and diseases of the iris/pupil. The branch is not just revolved around the problem and the treatment, but also deals with general aspects. Talking about the eyes, it describes the structure of the eyes in a way that all the intricate things are also dealt with, as in modern science. Surgeries such as hinoplasty and auraplasty have also been mentioned in the texts for cosmetic reasons. The three books, Charak Samhita, Sushurut Samhita and Ashtang Samghrah, also mention the methods regarding the general care of the eye and ENT structures. In addition to this, Shalakya Tantra has listed 25 diseases of the ear, 18 diseases of the nose, 11 diseases of the lips, 1 disease of the lymph glands, 23 diseases of the teeth, 6 diseases of the tongue, 8 diseases of the palate, 18 diseases of the throat-pharynx-larynx and 8 diseases of the oral cavity.

Shalakya tantra is one among the eight branches of Ashtanga Ayurveda. Shalakya Tantra deals with diseases that affect parts above neck – eyes, nose, throat, ears, and head. Shalakya tantra has various techniques to diagnose and treat different diseases that affect eyes, and other parts.

All the three major classics of Ayurveda – Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya deals with Shalakya Tantra. According to Ayurveda there are 72 netra roga (eye diseases), 11 osta roga (lip diseases), one gand rog (lymph disease), 23 danta rog (dental diseases), 6 jihva rog (tongue diseases), eight talu rog (palate), 18 gal rog (throat diseases), and eight savagat mukhrog (diseases affecting mouth cavity and face).

Sushrut Samhita tells in detail about surgical treatment of different eye diseases and precautionary measures to prevent spread of infections. Sushruta, considered to be the first known human surgeon, also describes the methods of removal of unwanted growths like tumors.

Shalakya Tantra deals not only with major treatment measures for diseases affecting sensitive parts of the head, but also puts detailed direction about easy home remedies for diseases like migraine, infections in eye, ears and other parts.

Psychiatry – Bhuta Vidya

Psychology/Psychiatry – Bhuta Vidya

Bhuta Vidya, a branch of ayurveda, deals with the diseases of mind or psychic conditions, which can be caused by super natural forces. It is almost equivalent to psychotherapy and hypnotism of the modern age. In Bhuta Vidya, several disinfectant plants are used for fumigation to make the atmosphere germ free. Various herbs and yogic therapies like meditation and pranayama are also used to pacify the psychological disturbances of the patients.

Graham chikitsa is a branch of the eight principle branches of ashtanga Ayurveda. It is also called bhut vidya and deals with psychology and psychiatry. It has methods of diagnosis and treatments for diseases attacking mind. Graha chikitsa deals with the different factors that affect the imbalances of mind.

Ayurvedic treatment methods for diseases affecting mind are mostly based on astrology, mantra and tantra. According to Ayurveda acharyas, mental diseases are caused due to the action of bhutas (bhootas – evil spirits or supernatural powers). The evil spirits can be Gandarvas, pisachu (devil), bhoota (ghosts), atma (spirits), etc. These supernatural elements cause trouble in the functioning of normal human mind.

It is still prevalent in India (and other parts of the world) the thought that dead people come and take the control of people, forcing them to do strange things. It is often believed that these atmas (souls) of dead people look to fulfill the unfulfilled wishes of the dead people.

Bhuts (or bhoots) are invisible to human eyes and can cause trouble in many different forms. That is why this branch of Ayurveda is often called bhoot vidya or the knowledge to prevent the action of bhootas.

These are situations beyond normal explanation of tridosha-dhatu-mala disorders. The treatment mainly is done by a mantrik, magician who can deal with extra-human elements like devils.

Ancient Indian astrology also deals with mental tribulations caused due to the movement of planets (Sun, Moon, and planets of the solar system are all considered planets in ancient Indian astrological concepts).

Kayachikitsa

Internal Medicine – Kayachikitsa

kayachikitsaAyurveda is the holistic approach, which is mainly concerned with the treatment of the body. In the process, the person undergoes a change in the lifestyle, which includes change in food, clothing and sometimes even residence. Ayam and vyayam, yogasadhana and gati are some of the vital components that are included in an ayurvedic treatment. Coming to kayachikitsa, it is the first branch of Astanga Ayurveda or eight-branched Ayurveda that deals with general medicine. The total treatment procedure is called Kaya Chikitsa (or internal medicine), wherein kaya means ‘body’ and chikitsa means ‘treatment’.

Kaya Chikitsa mainly deals with the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of general diseases, such as skin disorders, diabetes, tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis and many other disorders. Charaka Samhita is the most important scripture on kayachikitsa. It discussed the basic principles of treatment, various types of therapies and purification or detoxification methods. According to this natural treatment, the body of a person is product of the constant psychosomatic interactions and diseases caused are due to the imbalance caused in the trishods of the body. This imbalance caused in the three doshas of vata-pitta-kapha is sometimes, caused by the mind and occasionally by the body’s dhatu (tissues) and mala (toxin deposits). It is then that the kayachitikitsa branch of ayurveda comes to assistance.

Kayachitikitsa is the branch of herbal and holistic medicine, which delves deep into ascertaining the root cause of the illness. The entire Ayurvedic therapeutics is based on the concept of Agni. The concept of Kaya (Agni) is unique and is responsible for bio- transformation. As it is known that energy can neither be created nor can it be destroyed. In human body, Kaya provides the necessary energy for all bodily activities. The energy provided is derived from the food we eat and the air we breathe. The biological system of the body transforms this energy to one, which is utilized by the cells.

The Treatment
There are six stages of the development of disease are enumerated as aggravation, accumulation, overflow, relocation, build up in a new site and manifestation into a recognizable disease. In kayachikitsa, there is always an opportunity to stop the disease at each stage, thereby preventing its full manifestation. One of the significant methods of treatment under kayachikitsa is panchakarma. In this procedure, the body is purified and cleansed from the vitiated dosha to achieve the state of homogenizes and happiness. In short, this method mainly deals with reversing the disease path from its manifestation stage, back into to its site of original development, through special forms of emesis, purgation and enema.

Rejuvenation – Kaya Kalpa
Another unique aspect of kayachikitsa is rejuvenation also known as kaya kalpa. The term kaya kalpa is principally defined as the renewal of body. According to Ayurveda, the human body is made of seven types of dhatu or tissues structures – plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, marrow and reproductive fluids. To prolong the youthfulness of the body, kayachikitsa applies several physical and mental disciplinary methods with special medicinal preparations, to rebuild the body’s cells and tissues after the initial process of detoxification, through panchakarma.
