Peerumedu is a small hill station. It owes its name to Peer Mohammed, the Sufi Muslim saint. Peermade means ‘the hill of the Peer’. Wide vistas of tea, cardamom, rubber and coffee plantations decorated with silver cascades, sculptural rocks, meadows and mist-cloaked hilltops make Peermede the travelers paradise. The most delightful trekking trails complement the panoramic landscape.. It is a fertile land at an altitude of 914 meters.Here you are able to view extensive plantations of cardamom, eucalyptus, coffee, tea as well as pine forests and natural grasslands. Surrounded by rolling hills and valleys, Peerumedu is well known for its waterfalls, open grasslands and delightful trekking trails. Peeremedu and its surroundings are suitable for trekking, cycling and horse riding. a true lover of nature and like adventures, trek along the various trekking routes such as the Peru Hills, Vagamon, Kalthotti, Parunthupara, and Karandakapara Hills. Monuments like the summer palace and summer residence of the royal family add to the splendour of the land. The summer residence, now converted into a government guest house under the Department of Tourism, offers comfortable stay.
Pattumala :
Pattumala literally means hill draped in silk. At the top of the hill is a famous pilgrim centre. The shirine of St. Mary built entirely of granite depicts Kerala architecture. Lofty peaks little streams and tea plantations ad to the attraction of this place. The flower garden nearby depicts a facinating foray of colours of roses, orchids and anthurium.
Parunthumpara :
This is the most attractive spot in the High-ranges. This cluster of hillocks is about 3,800 feet (1,200 m) above sea level. It attracts a lot of tourists from inside and outside the state. The name comes from the olden belief that only eagles can reach the place. Trekking to this mountain will be an enchanting experience. The place is gusty and in the afternoon the area will be covered with mist.
At this time you may not be able to see the person next to you. Rocky plains, lush hillsides, forests, trekking trails and picturesque views lend charm to this destination. The road to Parunthumpara is flanked by unending stretches of cardamom, tea and coffee plantations. From Parunthumpara you can see the Makara Vilakku, the Holy Flame during Makara Samkranthi day.
Pullumedu :
‘Pullu’ means grass. As the name denotes the place is covered with velvet soft grass wherever you turn. The meandering journey to this hill town, along the Periyar river, offers a stunning view of the rolling hills draped in lush greenery. Velvet lawns, rare flora and fauna add to the beauty of Pullumedu. The transportation facility is mainly jeep due to the steep nature of the place. illuminations at the shrine are visible from here.Since it is part of the restricted forest zone.
