Elamthottam Bungalow, Kottayam
Elamthottam Bungalow was built in 1945.The word Thottam in Malayalam means an estate. As the name itself suggests the mansion is also an estate bungalow. The bungalow is a blend of local architecture, and the colonial style is evident on its well spread exterior patterns. The steeply pitched tile roof of the building flow down to border the low fringed sheet roof , covering the bay windows seen on all sides of the bungalow
Located 5kms from Kanjirapally Town & 100kms from Cochin, the drive up to the bungalow is along a mud road winding up from north east. While entering in to the long verandah facing the east, one would notice the calmness engulfing the compound which is canopied at the calmness engulfing the compound which is canopied at the south and the western flanks by tall trees.
The whole locality is a bit cool due to the vegetations around. The wide spread drawing room is well appointed with simple furniture and sofas. One can relax in the soothing calmness of the house as the hosts – Mr. Kurian Pottenkulam and Tessy takes care of the guests as a member of their family, in the most hospitable manner making one feel very special.
Stepping into the bedroom one can feel the cool air and light seeping through the large bay windows facing the south. The large dining room is furnished with massive tables and other grand furniture, the work of which has evident influences from mid-Victorian period
About Us:
I am a member of the Potamkullam family. My wife, children and I live on our family’s ancestral home.We are a typical Syrian Christian Family. I have opened my home to guests from different parts of the world, and I look forward to meeting you wonderful people and experiencing your varied cultures.
A community unique to this part of the country. It is essential that you know more about the place, and more importantly to know more about us. KANJIRAPALLY. Located in central Kerala, in the heart of Kottayam district, is famous for its rubber. It is inhabited by a peaceful closely knit community, which consists mainly of traditional Syrian Christian Families, all most all of them related to other each, either directly or through marriage..
The majority of our homes are located in rubber estates, this makes them ideal for a peaceful holiday from the pressures of the world.. We stay in our Tharavadu, which literally means “an ancestral house”. Built in 1945 by my Father and surrounded by rubber trees, the Tharavadu is a blend of local and colonial architecture. The word Thottam in Malayalam means an estate. As the name itself suggests the mansion is also an estate bungalow. Since it was built while the British still ruled in India there is some Western influence in the architecture of the building – though in essence it retains its local atmosphere.
The drive from the main Kanjirapally – Erattupetta road up to the bungalow, winds first through a paddy field, and then gradually climbs via a mud road on to the front compound of the house. When sitting on the long verandah facing east, you will immediately notice the calmness that engulfs the whole surroundings, with its canopy of tall green trees and a panoramic view of the lofty mountains of the Western Ghats away in the background.Generally the climate around the hill, on which the house is situated, is cool with a slight chill during the nights.
Accommodation:
The Bungalow offers TWO large double rooms with all modern amenities and very comfortable furniture. There is also a smaller bed-cum-study room available for the convenience of the guests.
The spacious drawing room is well appointed with simple furniture and comfortable sofas. The bedrooms are large but snug, and you can feel the cool air and gentle light trickle through the large bay windows facing the south. The big dining room is furnished with massive tables and other grand furniture, the work of which has evident influences from the mid-Victorian period.
The grand piano placed in the drawing room, one among the many musical instruments you will find here, is a very interesting antique piece. This is a much valued legacy handed down to the younger generations from our forefathers
Services:
In this Tharavadu you can experience the real flavour of typical Syrian Christian cuisine and also dishes from the west. For the tourist from Kochi, on his way to Thekkady and Periyar this is the ideal spot to stop and have their lunch break. This can easily be arranged with a bit of prior notice.
Kerala cuisine is quite famous and the best thing about it is that there is always something for every palette. The cuisine that we follow is that of central Kerala which has been passed on to us by earlier generations. From the mildly spiced “Meen Moily” to the spicy “Nadan Duck Roast”, a wide variety of Vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishesare available to you that are guaranteed to tickle every taste bud. For those who prefer something closer to home, a few continental dishes are available, [on request], as well. Toddy is also available, but seasonal and again on request.
Activities:
A visit to the monastery run by the order of St.Benedictines, where one can see a chapel built by incorporating various architectural styles of different religions. A school for the blind is also run by the monastery. Artifacts made by the inmates are on display at the school.
The outdoor lovers can make a take off to the Vagamon mountains for a getaway to the tea gardens were there are numerous panoramic views all around. A picnic can be arranged to the hills followed by a lunch at the home of the relatives of the Elamthottam household. This house is at Teekoy near a waterfall on the foothills of Vagamon
