Ayurveda:

Basically the approach in Ayurvedic treatment is dual. The first is based on sodhana i.e., ejection evacuation, uprooting or extirpation of the sick elements, or sicking causes. The other is
through Samana i.e., pacification, rectification, improvement quenching, assuaging or alleviating the sick condition. This system is used for eradicating the root causes of major ailments and alleviating the sick condition. This system of improving upon the less virulent ailments is of course the most suitable approach in any general treatment.

Before applying Sodhana Processes like vomiting, purging, sneezing, retaining medicated oils in prescribed parts of the body, the body should be well prepared, by the application of medicated oils and by a preliminary sweating system.

Application of medicated oil can be external or internal: Abhyangam when it is external and Snehapanam or Vasti when it is internal.

It is positively harmful to apply Sodhana methods without the preliminary preparation of the body by the application of medicated oils and effecting sweating. No purging treatment should be done without
letting the body sweat under medicated oils and making it flexible. Otherwise the body will break like a twig subjected to bending; the dry twig attains some measure of flexibility when treated with oils.

As a matter of fact the several sodhana processes have to be interspersed with the sweating treatment with medicated oils. For obtaining full strength, all general treatments should be finished with sweating programmes.

Thiruvananthapuram is an ancient city with trading traditions dating back to 1000 BC. It is believed that the ships of King Solomon landed in a port called Ophir (now Poovar) in Thiruvananthapuram in 1036 BC. The city was the trading post of spices, sandalwood and ivory. Sri Anizham Thrirunal Marthanda Varma (1729-1758 AD) can be aptly called the architect of modern Thiruvananthapuram. He ruled from his palace in Thackalay, now geographically located in Tamil Nadu. He dedicated the land to their patron deity Sri Padmanabhaswamy and the kings called themselves Padmanabhadasas. Marthanda Varma’s successor Rama Varma shifted the capital from Padmanabhapuram to Thiruvananthapuram In 1795. Slowly Travancore united with Kuttanad and Kochi and later with Malabar to become Kerala in 1965, the capital of which is Thiruvananthapuram.

Pizhichil is very useful for Rheumatic diseases like Arthritis, Paralysis, Sexual weakness, Nervous weakness and Nervous Disorders. In this treatment lukewarm herbal oils are applied all over the body by trained masseurs in a special rhythmic way continuously for about 60 to 90 minutes per day for a period of 7 to 21 days. Navarakizhi is a process by which body or any specific part thereof is made to perspire by the application of certain medical puddings externally in the form of boluses tied up in a muslin bag. This treatment is for all types of Rheumatism, Pain in the joints, blood pressure, certain kind of skin diseases etc. Kizhi is very effective for different types of arthritis, Spondilosis, sports injuries etc. Herbal leaves and herbs or herbal powders are applied to the whole body in boluses with hot medicated oils for 45 minutes per day for a period of 7 to 14 days. Dhara is also a special treatment practiced in Kerala. Medicated oil, medicated butter milk or cows milk are allowed to freely flow over the upper part of the fore head continuously for specific periods. In Sirovasthi, medicated oil is made to stand on the patient’s head for specific periods. The oil is contained in a close-fitting leather cap, made leak proof with black-gram powder. Constant temperature conditions are maintained throughout. This treatment is useful for loss of tactile sensation, facial paralysis, sleeplessness, dryness of nostrils and throat, severe chronic headache etc. Vasthi is for Arthritis, Paralysis, Numbness, Gastric complaints associated with Rheumatism and constant Constipation. Certain herbal oils, herbal extracts etc. are applied throughout the rectum daily for a period of 5 to 25 days. Abhyangam, a special type of oil massage in which strokes are given according to the diseases for 45 minutes per day for 14 days. This treatment is very useful for Obesity. In Nasyam, Herbal juices medicated oils etc. are applied through nose for 7 to 14 days. Nasyam is highly effective for certain types of Headaches, Paralysis, Mental Disorders, some types of skin diseases etc. Snehapanam is effective for Osteoarthritis, Psoriasis, and Leukemia etc. Medicated ghee is given internally in a proportionally increased quantity for period of 8 to 12 days. Karnapoornam is a process of medicated fumes or oils applied to the ears for 5 to 10 minutes. This process helps to clean the ear and avoids ailments associated to the ear. Tharpanam is a cleaning process of the eyes, which gives cooling effects, prevents cataract and strengthens the optic nerve.

The Ayurveda Diet is prepared under the direct supervision of the doctor for each individual guest . For this an exclusive chef is kept in the house. Pizhichil
Lukewarm medicated oil is applied on your body while you are lying on the “Dharapathi”. The oil is selected after careful analysis of the person’s character, body construction (physiological constitution of each individual), digestive power, etc. Oil dipped pieces of cloth are squeezed by hand and the oils rubbed smoothly over the body of the patient by masseurs on either side. The medicated oil is pressed out of the cloth uniformly over the body at a defined height and massaged gently in definite and rhythmic strokes.

Pizhichil is a classic rejuvenation therapy and it rejuvenates ‘magically’ the entire body, each cell deeply.

Pizhichil is a rare and special treatment of Kerala. It uses herbal oils and is very effective for rheumatic diseases like arthritis, paralysis, stiffness of limbs, spastic conditions, hemiplegia and nervous disorders. Nasyam
This is the ancient Ayurvedic therapy for sinusitis, migraine and chronic cold. Navarakizhi
This therapy is used to stimulate the nerves and strengthen muscles. Njavara, a kind of paddy having medicinal properties is boiled in a medicinal decoction and the kizhi is made with this boiled njavara. The kizhi is dipped in a mixture of milk and medicinal decoction and is applied all over the body. This treatment involves application of special Njavara rice paste. The body is massaged gently with linen bags filled with Njavara rice cooked well in herbal decoction.

BHIMA the “Terminator” prince of Pandavas of the Great epic ‘Maha Bharatha’ had passed through the place during his self exile from the kingdom along with the other Pandava clan and who on being thirsty gave a soft pounding with his ‘Gadha’ or giant club on the rock which instantly sprouted a fresh water spring which exists even now. It is also believed that the two marks left on the rocks nearby are the foot marks of Bhima.
